European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
