Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
