Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
